Thank you for considering band as a class for you student! Playing a musical instrument is one of the most rewarding experiences available to students in Lawrence Township, which has been nationally recognized as a Top 100 Community for Music Education. Lawrence Township is also home to several award winning ensembles, including LC's National Championship Marching Band and State Champion Symphony Orchestra.
The Road to Musical Success Begins at Belzer!
At Belzer, your student will have many options available to them. In 6th Grade, all students are in mixed instrument classes that play full band literature, not just method book one-line stuff all year. Both 6th Grade classes are under the direction of both Mr. DeCaro and Mr. Payne, not to mention the army of private lesson teachers available to your student during class time! 6th Grade students perform 5 concerts a year, including participation at the ISSMA Organization Contest in March.
7th Grade Students in Belzer Bands have a more specialized curriculum available. Students selected for 7B band perform their concert band music at our concerts. 7B students also combine with the 8B band as the Belzer Pep Band, which performs at several basketball games a year, including a Pacers Game at Conseco Fieldhouse. Students selected for the 7A concert band perform at a very high level. This group, in addition to their regular concert duties, gives spring recruiting concerts for 5th grade students in Lawrence Township.
8th Grade students in the Belzer Band are often the best of their age group anywhere in the State. Students selected for 8A, in addition to their regular concert duties, perform for the Belzer Veteran's Day Program and are often invited to perform for regional and national music conventions. This is the highest honor available to middle school bands, and fortunately Belzer is proud to have performed at these events in the past and hope to do so again in the near future. 8B students perform their own varied concert repitoire, including performances as the Belzer Pep Band and other concert appearances.
In addition to our two full-instrumentation concert bands, 7th and 8th grade students are eligible for Jazz Band. The Belzer Jazz Band meets during the school day and plays music of the swing, bebop, and moden eras. Popular Music of the 70's, 80's, and current tunes are also performed. The Jazz Band is the most active performing group at Belzer, attending festivals in Bloomington, Purdue University, Brownsburg, and occasionally out of state at venues including St. Louis.
