LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP
BEGINNING STRINGS ORCHESTRA PROGRAM
“Belzer Middle School Orchestras…practicing excellence”
Dear 5th Grade Parents and Students,
This year Lawrence Township is extending the beginning string program to incoming 6th graders at the middle school level! All fifth grade students will have the exciting opportunity to participate in the 6th Grade orchestra program! Orchestra classes will meet during the regular school day. Instruction will be offered on violin, viola, cello, and bass. You can find additional information about the Lawrence Township Orchestra with the enclosed information, sign up form/instrument selection sheet and information about the Performing Arts Institute (our summer program).
In order for your child to participate in these classes it will be necessary for you to furnish an instrument. We will be having a “Paige’s Display Night” where you can try-out the different string instruments and you can even rent one on the spot! This will be held at Belzer Middle School on April 22, from 6-8pm. This is the same night as Bridging To Belzer! If you cannot attend, you can always go to Paige’s Music (842-2102) to find the perfect instrument for you!
Learning to play an instrument and belonging to the school orchestra opens a whole new world of friendship and fun! Stringed instrument classes will continue to be available to your child through middle school and high school with many performance opportunities. These classes will offer varying levels of instruction giving students something to strive for. Students may also choose to take one on one instruction with a professional in addition to their regular orchestra class to further their knowledge. The opportunities for playing a stringed instrument after high school are abundant, with many universities offering scholarships for orchestra participation even if it is not your major area of study! In addition to music, students learn self-discipline, problem-solving, goal-setting, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, poise, enhanced physical coordination, high self-esteem, and the importance of teamwork- skills which are in great demand in almost every aspect of life. Like all arts, it has been proven that music has a profound effect on the academic success of students as well!
If you are interested and wish to receive more detailed information about the program, please complete the sign-up form and return it to your music teacher by April 18th OR bring it with you to Bridging To Belzer April 22nd. If you have already turned in your course selection sheet to Belzer and did not choose orchestra, it is not too late to change!!! Simply contact Mrs. Nieto and let her know that you would like to be in orchestra. You do have the choice of three electives so you may choose orchestra AND two other electives!!
