You have picked a place, and now what? If your child's teacher has approved the location, have your child start gathering more information about the site. Plan your visit. Have your child start thinking about what is important about their site and how to convince others of the same thing. Is it historic? Does it help with economy? Why is it important? Why should other visit? Hopefully your child is able to locate the place on a map by now and knows at least a little about it. Now is the time for them to start getting details.
Here are some links to places online where you can start your search for the perfect place to wander. Places like the Depart of Tourism's web site, or the listing of links (some don't work) of regional tourism sites are great places to start.
Looking for some other ideas? Across Indiana on WFYI is a great place to look for the cool and quirky, they even have their episodes online.
How should you go about your research? It's time to call in the History Detectives and see how they learn about the historic places and things they are sent out to learn about. As with anything on television have your parents check the episode first before watching it, while these are very interesting and almost always family friendly, the key word is "almost" so make sure your parents approve.
Finally remember that while you are doing your research you need to keep track of where you came up with your information. Keep a bibliography while you are researching to make it easier in the end when you need to put it all together. The link to an appropriate way to cite sources is just a click away.
