I do everything to provide a differentiated math curriculum for each child. One method I use is called compacting. Compacting allows children who have already mastered a specific skill or content area to "skip it" and move on to more appropriate work.
Before each unit of study, each child is given a written pre-test as well as a brief individual performance assessment. These provide me with information about your child's strengths and weaknesses on the upcoming topics. Most students will not have mastered our math units due to the advanced content (second grade), and they will meet with me daily for lessons and activities. Occasionally students may demonstrate mastery over an entire chapter or on specific skills. These students may skip all or part of that chapter. They may work on extension activities, which are more challenging problems for the same concepts, or they might continue to a different chapter.
New concepts are introduced using manipulatives and students then progress to written pencil paper activities. Students also participate daily in a menu of math games that reinforce the current lessons.
