Strand 1: Reading Instruction in the Secondary Classroom Part I: Changing our Assumptions
This workshop explores the following question: Why do we need to change our approach to reading in the secondary content area classroom? If the class is taken for credit, the workshop addresses this issue by means of readings, forum discussion, and the teacher’s observation, inventory, and reflection of reading instruction and achievement in his/her own classroom. If the strand is done as an independent study, how the material is covered, is up to the individual or group.
Strand 2: Reading Instruction in the Secondary Classroom Part II: Exploring the Integration of Reading Strategies
This workshop explores the following question: What can secondary content area teachers do to improve reading to learn in their classrooms? The workshop addresses this issue by means of readings, forum discussion, and the teacher’s own planning, implementation, and assessment of reading strategies in his/her classroom. If the strand is done as an independent study, how the material is covered, is up to the individual or group.

Does nonprint media—television shows, films, and songs—belong in the classroom? Absolutely! Nonprint media reach students and make connections in different ways from print media. Further, nonprint media often focus on contemporary topics that are not yet included in classroom textbooks.
