2006 Honorees

The following list indicates the individuals who attended the Tribute. In some cases, the spouse of the veteran attended because the veteran is deceased.  Also, it indicates if a veteran has passed away since attending the Tribute. Bios are not listed for those who attended a prior Tribute. 

Robert Albright, Army:  SGT Albright served with the 3231 Photo Detachment Unit in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre.  He was assigned to Paramount Studios as a motion picture and still photographer. He was in the Philippines, Okinawa, and Korea.  He interviewed Bataan Death March prisoners held in Korea.

Stanley Arnold, Army:  1LT Arnold was a member of the 148th Engineer Battalion that landed on Utah Beach behind the 4th Infantry Division. He led troops in bridge construction, mine warfare, and ferrying men across rivers. His battalion helped bridge the Rhine River.

Bill Barker, Army:  PFC Barker served with the 70th Infantry Division in the European Theatre.  He saw action in the Northern France campaign.

Clyde Bedwell, Air Corps:  Cpl Bedwell was a member of the 9th Air Force in England. He helped provide supplies, oil, and gasoline to front line units.  He was also in Europe, and was in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.

Bob Bitler, Army:  1SG Bitler served in the medical field at various posts in the US. In 1945, he was 1SG of a Medical Supply Unit in Kazon City in the Philippines.

Ed Brown, Army:  SGT Brown was a Field Artillery Observer with the 617th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, 5th Army. Her served in northern Italy during the Po Valley Campaign.

John Cassady, Home Front:  Mr. Cassady was a mechanical engineer for FMC-Link Belt here in Indianapolis during the war years.  His section made bearings for tanks, jeeps, and other equipment.

Avery Dickey, Navy, (Mrs. Dickey attended in his honor):  Painter 3/c Dickey served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre as a member of the Seabees. He went on to serve for 21 years.

Tom Dickman, Navy:  Signalman 1/c Dickman served in the Pacific Theatre aboard a minesweeper.

Herman Drake, Air Corps:  SSG Drake was an aerial engineer with the 1306 Base Unit in Karachi, India.  He flew the "Hump" from Calcutta to China delivering troops and supplies in the China-Burma-India Theatre.

Charles Fine, Home Front:   Mr. Fine was a radar technician for Magnavox Radar Company. He worked in the laboratories testing airplane radars.

Richard Harvey, Air Corps:  1LT Harvey flew the C-47 with the 60th Troop Carrier Group. He delivered medicine, ammunition and supplies into Yugoslavia. In Belem, Brazil, he flew troops home from Europe.

Jim Holland, Army:  Sergeant Holland was part of the Army Military Government Unit, and he was stationed in Korea. He was an aide to the Military Governor in Pusan, Korea.

Elmer Huse, Army:   PFC Huse served with the 327th Combat Engineers of the 3rd Army in Europe. He built pontoon bridges and roads.  He was in Belgium during the Battle of the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge).

Henry Jones, Air Corps, (Mrs. Jones attended in his honor):  Master Sergeant Jones was stationed in Italy with the 461st Bomb Group and was a crew chief for several bombers; two of which were the "Myra G" and the "Evil Weevil."

Howard May, Sr., Army, (Mrs. May attended in his honor):  Mr. May served with the 82nd Airborne Division. During the war he was a guard during the Nuremberg Trials. After the war he was in the army band, but when Korea and Vietnam came along, he was back in the infantry.

Bill Newman,  Air Corps:  Pvt Newman was an aviation cadet trained on being a bombardier. He was stationed in Texas.

James O'Donnell, Navy:  Water Tender 3/c O'Donnell was assigned to the USS Indianapolis. He participated in the battles of Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. After delivering key components of the Atomic bomb to Tinian, the Indianapolis was sunk on July 30, '45.  Mr. O'Donnell spent 108 hours in the ocean before being rescued.

Bob Petzel, Navy:  Ships Cook 2/c Petzel was assigned to PT Boat Squadron 31 in the South Pacific.  His squadron saw action in the Solomons, New Guinea, Palau Islands, Philippines, and Okinawa.

Edwin Pasko, Home Front:  Mr. Pasko worked in an aircraft machine shop making parts for jet engines which were in the early stages of development.

Hugh Pyle, Army:  SSG Pyle was in charge of a mortar section with the 24th Infantry Division. On December 4, '41, he was stationed at Scofield Barracks in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese.  He was part of the invasion force to recover the Philippines.

Carl Roberts Jr., Air Corps:  SSG Roberts served in the 379th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force.  After a bombing run from Munich, he was shot down.  After 17 days of evading the Germans, he joined up with soldiers of the 101st Airborne, and ended up in the town of Bastagone, which was soon surrounded as the Battle of the bulge began. He flew a total of 34 missions.

Fred Selm, Navy:  MM 3/c Selm served aboard the USS New Jersey which saw action at the Marianas, Philippines, and Okinawa.

Bud Shetrone, Army:  PVT Shetrone was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.  Germany surrendered before he was shipped overseas.  Deceased

Robert Stewart Sr., Navy:  As a Navy pilot, LT Stewart's mission was to hunt enemy submarines and surface raiders so sea lanes would be free of the enemy.  He saw action in the English Channel, Bay of Biscay, Irish sea, and Brazil coast.

Edward Thacker, Navy, (Mrs. Thacker attended in his honor):  Seaman 1/c Thacker was a gunman aboard the USS Downes and USS California in the Pacific Theatre.

Jack Tretter, Merchant Marine, (Mrs. Tretter attended in his honor):  Mr. Tretter trained at Sheepshead Bay in New York.  After the war, he joined the Army and served twenty years.

Russell Van Treese, Air Corps:  2LT Van Treese was a bombardier instructor at Laughlin, Enid, and Fredrick air bases.

Bill Walker, Army:  Mr. Walker joined when he was 18. While in he was an expert in firing mortars. Prior to being shipped overseas he was injured from a fall and honorably discharged.
